Tajikeimɨk is the new and developing health and wellness organization working toward health transformation for Mi’kmaq in Nova Scotia. Health transformation is a multi-year process of the Mi’kmaq taking control of our health and wellness resources and decision-making.
Created and guided by the Chiefs and Health Directors from the 13 First Nations in Nova Scotia, Tajikeimɨk is on a journey to transform the health system to better meet the needs of Mi’kmaw people and communities in Nova Scotia.
Tajikeimɨk works with communities, Indigenous organizations and partners to enhance existing health and wellness programs and develop new initiatives – while ensuring they are accessible, community-led, rooted in wholistic and two-eyed seeing approaches, and guided by Mi’kmaw culture and values.
Tajikeimɨk means: To be healthy
Vision: A healthy, vibrant Mi’kmaq Nation
Mission: Elukuti’kw wjit naji-wlo’ltinenew utanminal. (We are working toward better health for all in our communities.)
Commitments to Communities
Guided by Mi’kmaw culture: We will advocate for our people’s well-being with a culturally safe approach that draws on ancestral knowledge. In everything we do, we are guided by our Mi’kmaw culture and values.
Exceptional wholistic health and wellness: We will root ourselves in wholistic and two-eyed seeing approaches that care for the spiritual, physical, emotional and mental well-being of individuals and communities. We will build on and incorporate successful evidence-based Indigenous Models of Care.
Collaboration and community: We will continue collaborating with Chiefs, Councils, and health staff and directors. And we will engage with elders, youth and community members. Together, we will create a self-determined health organization and shape how health and wellness are practiced in our communities.
Our Promise: Transforming the health and wellness of our communities
Tajikeimɨk is on a journey to transform the health system to better meet the needs of Mi’kmaw people and communities in Nova Scotia. This transformation is building on, and embracing, the success of Mi’kmaw organizations that are improving Mi’kmaq health and wellness. It is guided and supported by Mi’kmaw Chiefs, and we are working collaboratively with federal and provincial partners to advance the shared vision of a new Mi’kmaw health and wellness organization.
Through Tajikeimɨk, the Nation will control the design, development, delivery and evaluation of Mi’kmaq health and wellness, while ensuring high-quality, culturally safe, wholistic health and wellness programs and services – with the goal to improve health outcomes and the wellbeing of the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia.
