Tajikeimɨk recognizes the importance of providing culturally safe and appropriate cancer care services for Mi'kmaq people in Nova Scotia.

Guided by the Mi'kmaq Cancer Care strategy, this initiative will work to address the unique needs of Mi'kmaq people and communities by enhancing access to culturally safe, high-quality cancer care, and supporting wholistic well-being.

What We Aim to Do:

The Mi'kmaq Cancer Care initiative is working toward:

  • Culturally Safe Cancer Care: To engage with community voices to identify needs and advocate for cancer care services that truly reflect Mi'kmaq culture, values, and traditions.
  • Community Outreach: To collaborate with community Health Directors and staff to raise awareness of cancer prevention, early detection, treatment options, and aftercare services.
  • Collaboration with Partners: To work with Nova Scotia Health's Cancer Care Program, IWK Health's Oncology Speciality Services, and community health partners to advise on the fulfillment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Call to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
  • Etuaptmumk (Two-Eyed Seeing): To ensure current health systems integrate Indigenous and Western knowledge systems into care planning, policies, and services.

Resources:

As we create new resources, and identify resources that are culturally safe and appropriate, we will add them here - Check back often!
