The Office of L'nu Nursing works to increase the number of Mi'kmaq and Indigenous nurses in Nova Scotia, by advocating for the removal of barriers in nursing education and supporting the inclusion of traditional Mi'kmaw knowledge, values, and teachings alongside modern nursing practices. This effort aims to improve healthcare services and outcomes for Mi'kmaq and Indigenous peoples in Nova Scotia.

The Office of L'nu Nursing was created through the L'nu Nursing Initiative and operates under Tajikeimɨk. The office supports current and future nurses, helping them become leaders in healthcare, advocates for their communities, and role models for future generations.

What We Do:

  • Community Outreach: Collaborate with communities and schools to raise awareness about nursing careers, share resources, and encourage more students to pursue a path in nursing.
  • Support Mi'kmaq and Indigenous Nursing Students: Provide mentorship and resources to nursing students, and support future students during the application process.
  • Build a Community: Connect Mi'kmaq and Indigenous nurses and nursing students across the province to share experiences and knowledge, and celebrate achievements.
  • Overcome Educational Barriers: Identify and address the unique challenges faced by Mi'kmaq and Indigenous students in nursing, and provide leadership to the schools of nursing in an effort to decolonize and Indigenize policies and curriculum.
  • Improve Healthcare for Mi'kmaq and Indigenous People: By increasing the number of Mi'kmaq and Indigenous nurses, we work to increase culturally safe and appropriate care, while addressing gaps in healthcare services for Mi'kmaq and Indigenous people in Nova Scotia.
